Importance behind YMOF:

Young Minds: Our Future, the Third Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, will provide updated national prevalence estimates of mental disorders in children ages 4-17. It will also provide data on health service use, wellbeing and a range of risk and protective factors.

 

These findings will be important for policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders right across Australia  by revealing which children are most at risk for poor mental health, what support services they access (and barriers to access) and how we can better prevent mental ill health.

How can you help?

Still have questions about YMOF?

Parents trust community leaders. Hearing about this study from you will make parents more likely to agree to participate if they are approached. YMOF will contribute to a better understanding of current child and youth mental health across Australia, which will benefit children, families, schools, and communities.

No. Other than sharing the promotional material, YMOF has no other implications on the workload of your staff.

  • Our interview team from Roy Morgan will approach random addresses across Australia to invite families to participate. This approach ensures an unbiased sample.
  • 6,500 parents/carers (of children aged 4-17 years) will be interviewed in person in their home by an interviewer.
  • 3,500 adolescents aged 11-17 years will be invited to complete a survey on a tablet.
  • Families are selected randomly and cannot opt in to participate if they’re not selected.
  • Families will also be asked to provide consent for the research team to access linked data such as NAPLAN.
  • The survey is completely confidential.

The study will be in the field from November 2025 through to late 2026.  We have approached you close to when interviewers will be in your area, so we’d appreciate you sharing materials as soon as you are able.

This study has received ethics approval from Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HRE2024-0729).
